Short & Sassy

For as lonnnnnng as I can remember I wore my hair long. By the time I turned 19, I was slowly losing interest in it. I cut and donated my hair to Locks of Love for the 1st time at 20 years old.

That was one of the most fulfilling days of my life. I've always found ways to give and help others, who knew giving my hair would make a difference. After that cut, i grew it back out for a little while. By the time I had my daughter 5 years later, it was long and full again.

I think my hair became my saving grace. It was the one thing I had control over as my life began to go through many changes( the loss of a child, my mom remarrying and relocating, a bad break up and eventually my own relocation).

Once I moved to Georgia, the urge to cut my hair soon surfaced. This time though, I cut in support of my child. I assumed due to our relocating and being in a new environment that it affected my daughter's hair causing it to fall out. Who knew, it happened due to a family's member's negligance to inform ME that she had relaxed my child's hair. I cut my hair so that my daughter would feel comfortable with having short hair.

So many times, we put more emphasis on our appearance than we should. I love my hair but it doesn't define the amazing woman am I. Hair is apart of our cosmetic make up. We can change it at the drop of a dime( kind of similar to the way some of us change our clothes daily).

I'm now 36 ( 😬) and I've come to appreciate wearing my hair short. It allows my mornings to be spent doing other things vs curling and styling my hair. I'm a proud member of the short hair don't care community! I've embraced it and I love it... My only prayer is that my ( future) husband will love it as much as I do..

Simply Stated...

I haven't blogged in what seems forever. I thought with it being Summer Break, I'd have more time because I'm not being pulled every which way.... So much for thinking. My daughter left to go visit her father in Boston for a few weeks. I can't even began to tell you how hard that was. This is the 1st time in 9years, that she has been away from me for such a long period of time. My Mooda Pie is my little BFF, my partner, my fashion consult and more often than not, she's my photographer( I take lots of pictures on Sundays because that's the one day of the week I get to look super extra cute)... I MISS her so. She has texted me and called but its not the same as seeing her big beautiful eyes, her smile and those dimples!!! I miss her dancing off beat and her creativeness. My mind tells me, " Go get her early" but in actuality I know she deserves to spend time with her father and his family. I hate feeling like I have to share her but this is definitely what it has boiled down too. Sharing my Mooda Pie...

Up next, my Son!!! This little dude has surely stepped up his game in the drive mommy crazy arena. He's 2, I get it BUT boy oh boy was I NOT prepared for a son. My mother constantly tells me, "he's a boy, that's what boys do"... If I could say it with no feelings of remorse, I'd yell "SHUT UP NETTA". lol But I'm not that crazy to disrespect my Mom( although thinking it is the equivalent to saying it)..  How ironic, just as I'm writing about her, she calls. I love that woman. She's said to me more times than once," if you feel like we need to ride and get Li just let me know". My Netta girl, my other ride or die partner.

Let's see, Oh yeah I got braids!!!! Me with my big ole water apple head like Gina from Martin, got braids. I must admit they are cute though and I'm all for the cuteness. Lol

Weigh loss!!!!! Whoever knew it was such a challenge. But I'm motivated to keep going. I love the feeling I get when I complete my 2/3 miles. When I push myself to finish in lesser time than my last walk/run! There's a feeling that comes along with accomplishment and I'm riding the waves baby!!!!!

I'm trying to avoid rambling so I'll end it now..... But Simply Stated, life is good. I have a few days that are bad, more that are good, serve a God who Loves me despite of my mishaps and a family that loves each other more than a little bit. I have sister friends who have had my back, who listen and are not judgmental and that makes it all worth the while....

So here you go Nek. You blogged!!!! Yes I did and it feels Great!!

It's that good Hair Y'all.. or is it?

I always hear, "Nek you got some good hair, is your hair relaxed, and my fave What are you mixed with"...??? It's all in the hair or is it?

Growing up was a nightmare sometimes. I always had super long hair and when my mom washed it, it was an all day process. Wash, condition, press, grease scalp, comb and style. I was so glad it wasn't a weekly process!!

I never really needed a relaxer( yall do know there's a difference between a relaxer and perm right). I got my 1st relaxer at around 12 and my last real one at about 23 years old and for like 2 or 3 years after that, I got what 1 would call just a halo( relaxer around the edges because they were what I perceived as nappy)SMH.

During my High School years, my uncle styled my hair. Every other Thursday( I worked part-time in my grandmother's hair salon) was my day to get pretty. I swear, my classmates would always ask if my hair was a weave! LOL I did attempt to glue a track in my hair once and it looked a hot mess! I never did that again. I was never big on braids either. Tried that a few times. I never understood the hoopla associated with weave and braids. Too each his own, I suppose...

Now that I'm an adult, I'm learning how to properly care for my hair. How to train my curl pattern and the importance of drinking water. Water keeps the scalp replenished and it helps to retain the nutrients needed to keep it healthy. There are so many treatments I now know about because I'm 100 percent natural.... Ahhh, natural.

There are so many different levels of natural. I've witnessed a number of friends doing the BC( big chop) and joining the Au Natural journey. We've joined hair groups, sought out different products in in the name of taking care of my hair..
I've learned, good hair isn't just always the grade/grain of our hair, it's how well we care for it. Who wants to walk around with a mane that resembles a lion? hmmmm, some do but I'm hoping it's by choice.!!!! lol

We all can obtain good hair. Whether your hair is,( As my sistergirl once said), " straight N1 hair( negro hair) or as my bestie told me, my hair(mine) is 1/2 bred, ( I died at both), WE all can have nicely styled and healthy hair!! Some of us will result in the usage of creamy crack, some will use berries and juices, some will seek out products to make it curl just right! Whatever boat you choose to Rock in, make it work for you and embrace your hair!! Cause, it's not about the grade of hair but how well you maintain it~~~
